“Ideas Move the World” — Creating Unique Cinematic Experiences with a Distinct Vision
I am Masayuki Nagata, a film producer from Japan, dedicated to pushing the boundaries of independent filmmaking. With limited budgets and resources, I rely on creativity and passion to craft films that captivate and inspire audiences worldwide.
My feature film, Onsen Shark (2024), made waves in Japan, generating buzz across social media. Combining shark horror, tokusatsu (practical effects), and comedy, the film introduced a fresh and entertaining take on genre cinema. It resonated strongly with domestic audiences, achieving a successful theatrical run across Japan and garnering attention at numerous film festivals.
Currently, I am in discussions with international distributors and working toward overseas distribution. At the same time, I am developing the sequel to Onsen Shark, aiming for a 2026 release. To bring this vision to life, we are launching a crowdfunding campaign, and I invite you to join us in making this project a reality.
My filmmaking philosophy is centered on delivering an overwhelming cinematic experience through ideas alone. Unlike big-budget Hollywood productions, my approach focuses on bold storytelling and distinctive visuals—leaving a lasting impression on audiences in ways that defy expectations.

My Vision for Filmmaking
“Independent cinema has the power to do what mainstream films cannot.”
I am committed to creating films that break away from conventional industry models. My work blends absurd practical effects with heartfelt storytelling, evoking both laughter and emotion. My ultimate goal is to craft stories and characters that will be remembered and loved for decades to come.
Beyond filmmaking, I see cinema as a catalyst for community-building and cultural evolution. I actively engage with audiences through crowdfunding, fan events, and interactive experiences, ensuring that my films are not just stories on a screen but shared moments of excitement and connection.
Expanding Internationally & Future Ambitions
Bringing Japanese independent cinema to global audiences is my mission. Onsen Shark is just the beginning—I aim to showcase my films in more countries and film festivals worldwide.
My next major challenge is expanding Onsen Shark into a full-fledged intellectual property (IP). From character merchandise and games to animation and cross-media storytelling, I envision building a brand that transcends cinema and reaches fans across various platforms.
I am actively seeking partnerships with international distributors, film festivals, and fellow creators. If you are interested in collaborating, I’d love to hear from you.
Let’s work together to push the boundaries of independent cinema and share bold, original storytelling with the world!
